Asphalt Repairs become necessary for several reasons. Whether it be standing water, chemical spills, root damage, or simply wear and tear, All Paving has the expertise and the resources to properly assess your asphalt repairs projects and repair them professionally.
It is beneficial to maintain the upkeep of asphalt while it is still in fair condition to prevent it from becoming a much larger issue that may require the removal and replacement of the entire slab of pavement.
If your asphalt is showing signs of small cracks or is forming uneven surfaces, then it is time to take steps for either reversing this damage or completely replacing the uneven foundation with a correctly designed foundation.In order to know the extent of the asphalt repairs that need to be done, the source of the problem first needs to be identified.
Here are some examples of how asphalt surface can become damaged.
If so, the surrounding area may need to be graded properly to allow for water to make its way to a nearby catch basin or drain field. If water is allowed to pool and sit in these pockets, the asphalt will lose strength and become prone to transforming or developing cracks.
Nearby Tree Roots.
Roots may need to be pruned or removed, and a bio-barrier or curbing may need to be installed to prevent the roots from causing further damage. We can help with the planning of this step to prevent this from causing you issues down the line.
Poor Base Conditions.
If this is the case, the limerock underneath the damaged asphalt may need to be addressed. If the base layer of limerock is damaged or was not laid down properly, it will continue to cause the pavement to break up and become uneven. A proper base layer is a key to ensuring that the pavement remains durable and will stand the test of time.
Sinkhole is Forming Beneath the Surface.
Excavation down to the source of the sinkhole is necessary if a sinkhole is present. The sinkhole will need to be filled and the surface above it repaved.
Recent Exposure to Caustic Chemicals.
If exposed to harsh chemicals, the affected asphalt area should be entirely removed to prevent further damage. If left alone the affected area will spread to the rest of the foundation, making it even more unsightly and difficult to repair.
Once the problems have been identified and a plan of action has been approved, the repair process will begin.
First, damaged materials are saw-cut and removed to isolate the area in which the asphalt repair will be conducted.
Then, the area of the repair is compacted and graded to ensure a proper base level and elevation.
In certain cases, additional limerock may be brought in to bring the surface of the repair area to the proper depth.
Once the repair area is properly prepped, a DOT approved tack coat is applied to the surface which ensures the asphalt smoothly adheres to the repair site and is flush with the surface.
Next, DOT approved hot mix asphalt is supplied and installed. After the asphalt is laid down, a 3-5 ton vibratory roller is run over the patch to compact it to the proper height.
Finally, a plate compactor or hand tamper is used to create a flush adhesion to the surrounding areas, providing a smooth and pristine appearance.
Once finished, the pavement will be ready for use almost immediately. The adhesion and compacting may take up to two weeks to fully solidify and some settling of the asphalt is normal.
